Ink Fingerprinting - Demo

Before You Begin

• Verify the individual’s identity using a valid photo ID.

• Have the individual wash and thoroughly dry their hands if needed.

• Make sure hands are free of excessive lotion, oil, dirt, or moisture.

• Fill out the card completely. (be sure to use the codes listed in the training binder)

During Fingerprinting

• Use a thin, even layer of ink—too much ink can cause smudging.

• Roll each finger nail edge to nail edge in one smooth, controlled motion.

• Do not roll back and forth.

• Apply consistent, gentle pressure; pressing too hard can blur ridge detail.

• Keep the other fingers out of the way while rolling each print.

• Check each print before moving on.

A Good Print Should Show

• Clear ridge detail

• Full fingerprint pattern

• Minimal smudging

• No excessive ink or blank areas

• Proper placement inside the designated box

Redo printing if a Print Is Poor

• If a finger is injured, missing, bandaged, or otherwise cannot be printed normally, write “N/A” in section and document reason.

Remember: Requirements can vary depending on the agency requesting the fingerprints. Always follow the instructions on the fingerprint card and the requirements of the receiving agency.
